DBT teaches practical skills that help you navigate difficult situations without turning to substances, compulsive behaviours, or other unhealthy coping mechanisms. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult emotions, DBT helps you learn how to tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and respond more effectively when faced with triggers, cravings, or interpersonal conflict.
Originally developed for people experiencing significant emotional distress, DBT has proven particularly effective in addiction recovery, where overwhelming emotions and impulsive decisions can often drive addictive behaviours.
Our therapists support you in developing four core DBT skill areas:
- Mindfulness – Learning to stay present and grounded in the moment rather than becoming overwhelmed by thoughts, emotions, or cravings.
- Distress Tolerance – Building the ability to cope with difficult situations and emotional pain without resorting to addictive or self-destructive behaviours.
- Emotion Regulation – Understanding and managing intense emotions more effectively, reducing emotional vulnerability and impulsive reactions.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness – Developing healthier communication skills, setting boundaries, and improving relationships with others.
