Instead of asking whether a thought is true or false, MCT helps you understand how certain thinking patterns—such as worry, rumination, threat monitoring, and overthinking—can keep emotional distress and addictive behaviours alive.

Many people struggling with addiction find themselves trapped in repetitive mental cycles: dwelling on past mistakes, worrying about the future, obsessing over cravings, or constantly analysing their thoughts and feelings. MCT helps break these unhelpful patterns by teaching you how to step back from your thoughts and reduce the amount of attention and energy you give them.

Our therapists help you recognise and overcome the thinking habits that contribute to emotional distress and addictive behaviours, including:

  • Excessive worry and overthinking
  • Rumination about past events or regrets
  • Constant monitoring of cravings or urges
  • Fear of losing control over thoughts
  • Negative self-focus and self-criticism
  • Repetitive thinking that fuels anxiety, depression, or addiction

Using practical techniques, MCT teaches you how to:

  • Develop greater control over your attention
  • Reduce worry and mental rumination
  • Respond differently to intrusive thoughts and cravings
  • Build confidence in your ability to cope without overanalysing
  • Break the cycle of unhelpful thinking patterns
  • Improve emotional wellbeing and mental flexibility

A key principle of MCT is understanding that thoughts themselves are not the problem—it’s how we respond to them that often creates distress. By learning to disengage from unhelpful thinking patterns, you can experience fewer cravings, less anxiety, improved emotional resilience, and greater freedom to focus on what truly matters in your life.

MCT can be particularly effective for individuals experiencing addiction alongside anxiety, depression, stress, obsessive thinking, or persistent worry.
